MAST FITaid

MAST FITaid

An award-winning accessibility aid designed to support independent and inclusive FIT sample collection.

Making FIT testing more accessible

Completing a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) can present practical challenges for people with visual impairments or reduced dexterity, creating barriers to participation in bowel cancer screening.

MAST FITaid is an innovative sample collection aid designed to make FIT testing more accessible. By providing a secure platform for the OC-SENSOR sampling bottle, alongside tactile features and accessible instructions, FITaid supports greater independence during sample collection.

Developed in collaboration with NHS England, the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Thomas Pocklington Trust, FITaid reflects Mast's commitment to improving accessibility and supporting inclusive screening services.

Secure and simple one-handed handling

The integrated bottle stand holds the OC-SENSOR sampling bottle securely in place, helping users insert the collection stick and close the bottle without needing to hold it.

A central guiding channel supports reliable bottle closure, while the ambidextrous design allows FITaid to be used with either hand.

These features help reduce handling difficulties and support more independent sample collection.

Functional tactile guidance

FITaid incorporates raised tactile features to help users identify key areas of the device through touch.

A raised orientation marker supports positioning, while the raised QR-code outline helps users locate the digital instructions.

Together with the central guiding channel, these features support easier navigation and handling for people with visual impairments.

Supporting inclusive FIT screening

MAST FITaid was developed to help address barriers to FIT sample collection for people with visual impairments, reduced dexterity and other accessibility needs.

Designed with input from healthcare professionals, accessibility organisations and people with lived experience, FITaid provides a practical solution that screening services can offer to patients who may require additional support.

By helping patients complete their FIT more independently, FITaid supports Mast's wider commitment to improving accessibility and reducing inequalities in bowel cancer screening.

Instructions designed for accessibility

FITaid includes accessible printed instructions featuring large text and high-contrast illustrations to guide patients through the sample collection process.

Additional guidance is available through a QR code, including video, audio and written transcripts to support different accessibility requirements.

NHS-approved uncontracted Braille provides essential information directly on the printed instructions, helping patients access guidance in their preferred format.
