Calprotectin
Calprotectin
Calprotectin is an inflammatory protein abundantly present in neutrophils, which are released into the bowel in response to mucosal inflammation. Tools for the detection of calprotectin in stool samples have been available for years as both qualitative and quantitative assays for use in the distinguishing IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) from functional intestinal disorders (e.g. Irritable bowel syndrome, IBS) and monitoring ulcerative colitis (UC) disease activity.
