Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is an early and sensitive blood biomarker for tissue injury and inflammation and has been indicated in many inflammatory diseases. Similar to C-reactive protein (CRP), SAA is synthesized in the liver and measured in blood serum. However, SAA is markedly more sensitive to inflammatory stimulus, responding quicker than other acute-phase biomarkers. SAA is a latex agglutination test that has been designed for the measurement of SAA protein in serum. SAA test permits the early detection of tissue injury, infection and inflammation by optically measuring the change in turbidity caused by the agglutination of the latex particles sensitised with SAA antibodies. Eiken SAA is extremely popular in clinical veterinary science and can be used to monitor injury recovery in a number of animal species. Eiken SAA has been validated for use on a range of birds of prey, domestic, captive and livestock animals.
